PONYCAT | Boundary St, New Farm

Out of all my friends, I've known my friend Ellen for the longest. We met in preschool at the mere age of 5 and watched our friendship blossom over the years - one of which transcends different high school, studying different courses and living in different cities. We meet up more regularly now that she only lives in the Gold Coast (vs her dwelling in Melbourne for the past 5 years!).

This weekend, we ventured out for brunch after her week of night rotation at the Gold Coast Hospital (she's a OB/GYN medicine resident). Ponycat has been on my list for a while after seeing an instagram photo of the chalkboard menu that they have.

Saturdays are quite busy and I had to wait a while before I could get a table. All the staff are extremely attentive and happy - always smiley at you even though we made them wait while we were deciding out of the many all-day-breakfast menus. For drinks, I ordered my usual mocha and Ellen ordered a skinny cappucino. For food, I ordered scrambled eggs on sourdough bread with a side of haloumi and field mushrooms and Ellen ordered an avocado smash.

Both our coffees were brewed well-  nothing special but nothing to complain either. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection. It's not a standout amongst the cafes and brunch places around Brisbane but it's certainly above average.

I simply love the decor of the cafe. As the many suggested, there was indeed a pony and a cat mural on one corner of the room with wooden chairs hung from the ceilings as decoration. There was a comfy lounge on the side for people to wait while their takeaway coffee was being brewed. Ponycat did not have a paper menu and instead they wrote up their all-day-breakfast selection on the chalkboard that affronted their cashier. It's a fantastic move. It adds character to the store as well as saves the environment!

RECOMMENDED FOR: anyone wanting a quirky place for a casual Saturday brunch
