HOSOKAWA JAPANESE RESTAURANT | Racecourse Rd, Hamilton

Since the end of last year (?), my cousins and I started a tradition of meeting up every month or so to have a catch up dinner. Every time we go out, they are always selfless enough to let me pick the restaurants knowing that it may or may not tantalise their taste buds. The five us with varying gustatory perceptions (ranging from purely carnivorous to a predilection for salad munchies) went out try to Hosokawa Japanese Restaurant.

The restaurant is easily missed if you aren't trying to find it. It is nestled in a street-side local shopping centre with a nondescript entrance. The decor of the restaurant is simple and attempts to be a little bit fancy with the sushi chef performing his tricks in one corner and a mini bar next to it.

We order a large sashimi platter, a large sushi platter, edamame, 2x gyoza, 2 x salmon tempura hand roll, a unagi hand roll and yakitori. All dishes were done really well. The sashimi was super fresh and juicy. The highlight of the meal was probably the salmon tempura hand roll and the gyoza- with had a lovely warm taste and texture. The only negative aspect of the night was when my dear cousin Johnny ordered a tea (costing $2) it came out in this tiny cup with no refill - needless to say, it was severely overpriced.

On a side note: my sincerest apologies to my sister who looked on from the sideline as we ate our way through two big plates of sashimi and sashimi-related sushi. I momentarily forgot that she did not eat raw seafood and thought that the sushi platter included non-raw sushi too.

RECOMMENDED FOR: quick meal after work with someone who isn't afraid to dish out the extra dollar for a casual Japanese dine in experience
