CHESTER ST BAKERY & BAR | Chester St, Newstead

Generally, I'm pretty easy going. I dont usually give negative reviews on resturaunts but unfortunately Chester St Bakery & Bar was a bit of a letdown. Ive been wondering why its been top 10 most popular restaurant on Urbanspoon for a protracted period despite only 53% of users (at the time of posting) giving it a thumbs up. And now i know why.

My uni friends and I went to Chester St on a public holiday for a long awaited catch up. The giant open wood fire oven, retro lamp shades and tied walls were an instant hit for me. I was looking forward to a Moose and Gibson type experience but alas was bitterly disappointed.

They say never to judge a book by its cover and they were right. Except in the reverse.

My friend and I had only sat down for a couple of minutes and the waiter/bar hostess asked us "Are you going to order anything?" and when we said yes, he walked off without bringing back a menu? When all the girls arrived, we lined up and ordered from the counter. It was evident th counter and the bar/drinks were disconnected as after paying, 3 out of the 6 drinks we ordered apparently could not be made as they ran out of ingredients (at 3 in the afternoon?). The kitchen forgot two of the drinks and one of the girl's cake. One of my friends ordered something but got another.

The girls at the counter were lovely and cheerful. I'd want to be friend with them anyday. The boys, in their printed short sleeve shirts, skinny shorts and boat shoes appeared indifferent and disdainful. All in all it was an extremely disappointing afternoon despite great company.

Needless to say, I would not come here again. Poor service > good food any day.
